about

"BRAIN AND SPINAL COLUMN" examines the limitations of how the brain filters sensory and other informational input. This is the first of two recorded versions of this song, one in 1977 and one in 1984. The poem in the middle of this version was written by my first wife Sheree after a particularly vivid nightmare she had. This is one of my most expressive vocal performances.

lyrics

"BRAIN AND SPINAL COLUMN"

Evening animal leaps and bounds,
Half acrobat, half circus clown!

Rigid categories vanish!
Surrealists soon get their wish!
Fowls de-evolve, return to fish!
Air shimmers with lust and fusion!

What divides truth from illusion?
It’s your brain and spinal column!
What reads senses in confusion?
It’s your brain and spinal column!

Anarchy continues below,
Putting on one hell of a show:
The illegitimate ego
And its need for deep seclusion!

What divides truth from illusion?
It’s your brain and spinal column!
What reads senses in confusion?
It’s your brain and spinal column!

World within a world!
Dream within a dream!
Art within an art!
Scream within a scream!

Veins of metal dripping acid, ions taken, obscured!
Victim’s evil drawn from guts, eternal bonds lured!
Electric grinder in the sand, molten phrases astound!
Thoughts, memories, cynical secrets, distant whispers abound!
Hidden pleasures release power; forceful screaming increases!
Panting objects excrete iron; powerless creature deceases!
Foreign magnet, gory intruder, suckling cancer thrives!
Draining martyr, self-contained, chronic throbbing survives!

A toy seen as infinity!
The possibilities endless
As to what it could be!
Transmutation of molecules
Over a period of time --
It began as an amoeba!
It ended as a mind!

Meanwhile, centers built to a fill
Release, relax as is their skill,
And tomorrow stimuli will
Not stop making its intrusion.

What divides truth from illusion?
It’s your brain and spinal column!
What reads senses in confusion?
It’s your brain and spinal column!
