Black Ashes 07:44
"BLACK ASHES" These are the woodlands on the carapace of Turtle: This is where the nameless ancient ones came into being; This is where the Meadowcroft rocks gave shelter from the primeval storm; This is where the Adena built symbolic burial mounds; This is where the Haudenosaunee originated democracy and empowered women; This is where the Lenape annually renewed the World Tree; This is where the Shawnee found bountiful summer hunting grounds; And this is where the brutal pioneers of greed devastated and destroyed the dark aboriginal forests of America. Farmers slashed our mother ground, Death's head behind their plows; The moon stares, without a sound, At the way it all looks now. Black ashes -- villages in ruin where we dreamed so hard! Black ashes -- desolate nightmare under the stars! Black ashes -- silent insight into ancestral scars! Black ashes -- some dotted with pottery shards! Now that life is under the leaves, I deeply integrate rage -- Five centuries of disease Caused the death of an age! Black ashes -- where great worth returned to the earth! Black ashes -- remnants of those who were here first! Black ashes -- from a graveyard not to be disturbed! Black ashes -- from the cultures we need to preserve! Black ashes -- provide new inroads on cryptic curves! Black ashes -- where hidden fire fused the history and the hurt! Black ashes -- but now infidels dwell where our land was usurped! Black ashes -- depress us but inspire us to rebirth! Rise into the warm, moist pre-rain air. We contain this pristine night; We contain the throbbing drums of tribal splendor; We dance the vengeance dance, Companions of chaos and anarchy... [Copyright 2014 Todd Tamanend Clark. "WE CAN'T BREATHE" Ho-yah-hey-ho-yah-hai-ho-yah-ho-ho-yah-hee! Ho-yah-hey-ho-yah-hai-ho-yah-ho-ho-yah-hee! Ho-yah-hey-ho-yah-hai-ho-yah-ho-ho-yah-hee! Ho-yah-hey-ho-yah-hai-ho-yah-ho-ho-yah-hee! Hu-hu-hu-hu! The transmission of indigenous identity Is extremely incendiary, And therefore, we're left intoxicated and invisible. All we inherit are injuries When we should possess a hemisphere. We can't breathe When we're forbidden the expressiveness of our languages; We can't breathe When we're shackled by the manacles of the iron alphabet. We can't breathe When we're crushed inside the insect swarm; We can't breathe When they cause our children irreparable harm. We can't breathe When they eradicate the evidence of their own duplicity; We can't breathe When they devastate our homeland with festering sores. We can't breathe When they unbalance the forces of the side worlds; We can't breathe When everything we believed in is formless and forgotten. We can't breathe When we're dispersed and decimated by manifest destiny; We can't breathe When we're caught in the contagion of imploding proximities. We can't breathe When we're silenced by deft political machinations; We can't breathe When we've interiorized the inertia of hopelessness. We can't breathe When we're the objects of religious ridicule and derision; We can't breathe When we're made a mockery of by capitalist mascots. We can't breathe When we're undermined by the weak among our own; We can't breathe When we're subjected to the most extreme genocide ever known! (We can't breathe!) "BIRTHRIGHT BLUES" My parents conceived me on a dark November night; My parents conceived me on a dark November night; In the heat of lust, my mother held my father tight. I rode for nearly nine months in an epileptic womb; I rode for nearly nine months in an epileptic womb; Danger all around me, darkness never quite in tune. Vultures carved circles on the August morning I was born; Vultures carved circles on the August morning I was born; The scalpel gleamed with blood as my mother's flesh was torn. Eerie erosion/world's end! (New world emergence… new world emergence…) Eerie erosion/world's end! (New world emergence… new world emergence…) Eerie erosion/world's end! (New world emergence… new world emergence…) Eerie erosion/world's end! (New world emergence… new world emergence…) From water world to vapor world! (Native nativity… native nativity…) From water world to vapor world! (Native nativity… native nativity…) From water world to vapor world! (Native nativity… native nativity…) From water world to vapor world! (Native nativity… native nativity…) After the nurse bathed me, somewhere wolves began to howl; After the nurse bathed me, somewhere wolves began to howl; And somebody mumbled something... about the destiny of owls... "CHILDHOOD SHADOWS" There's amazing anguish Exploring Greensboro With reflections in the river In my childhood shadows. Surrounded by these sacred hills, Surrounded by these sacred hills, My feet may leave, but my heart never will, Surrounded by these sacred hills. My grandfather teaches me New ways to cultivate Ancient freedoms At an eccentric rate. Surrounded by these sacred hills, Surrounded by these sacred hills, My feet may leave, but my heart never will, Surrounded by these sacred hills. Astounding inquiry Into the nature of things Radiates wonder And strengthens my wings. Surrounded by these sacred hills, Surrounded by these sacred hills, My feet may leave, but my heart never will, Surrounded by these sacred hills. Endless possibilities, Senses not yet narrow, As I run, jump, play In my childhood shadows. Surrounded by these sacred hills, Surrounded by these sacred hills, My feet may leave, but my heart never will, Surrounded by these sacred hills. [Copyright 2014 Todd Tamanend Clark. "I LISTEN TO THE OWLS" The house my grandfather built juts out of a hillside overlooking the Monongahela River, with a slanting yard populated by numerous trees. After a scarlet sunset, the moon rises, casting surrealistic shadows, and the stars emerge, spreading the light waves of an expanding universe. My ever-widening intellect is ravenously hungry. My unwillingness to conform to my oppressors' paradigm creates situations that are painful, yet my mind absorbs subversive information like a mushroom absorbs rainfall. I stand in the darkness. I listen to the owls. A conspiratorial parliament of owls has convened to nocturnally contemplate the means by which to apply their woodland wisdom to the daunting task of anticolonial sedition. The rape of Turtle Island and its endemic ecosystems by the alien invaders must be stopped! I stand in the darkness. I listen to the owls. Owls are my allies, and they bring… Good fortune on the hunt… Good fortune on the hunt… Good fortune on the hunt… Good fortune on the hunt… [Copyright 2014 Todd Tamanend Clark. All rights reserved.]

"TALONS OF THE RAPTOR" The ominous owl thrives as a cunning carnivorous bird of prey. It prowls during the nighttime and is reclusive during the day. Its most effective hunting tools are stealth and sudden surprise. Within its indigenous habitat, the owl is wondrously wise. Talons of the raptor Take wing in silent flight. Talons of the raptor Spread death across the night. The owl's flight-ready skeleton is comprised of hollow bones. Wide pupils, high-density photoreceptors, and enlarged cones Provide an extended sense of stereoscopic depth perception. Smooth black talons can accurately grasp nocturnal nutrition. Talons of the raptor Take wing in silent flight. Talons of the raptor Spread death across the night. I merge with the minds of my allies! To the Onodowaga, I am Ohohwa, messenger of change. I carry communication from extra-dimensional domains. To the Lenape, I am Gokhos -- I see secrets in the night; To the Maya, I am part of a parliament surrounding their death god. To the Seminole, I am a sinister shapeshifter. My asymmetrical ear holes produce a three-dimensional auditory map. My translucent third eyelid protects my visionary functions. A strigine talon penetrates a murine orb. The bloody optic fluid congeals crimson as it drips from the dying mouse's eye… The beak that rends the flesh… Rules the realm of night… Overcoming wingtip vortices… Through a solitary migration… Of tremorous transition… With fatality and resurrection… Caught in a continuous crossfire… Between darkness and desire… After my shamanic sojourn to absorb what my allies know, I become wise and solemn, in balance with the natural flow. And if everything goes the way the ancient legends tell it, I'll soon be ready to regurgitate the semi-digested pellet. Talons of the raptor Take wing in silent flight. Talons of the raptor Spread death across the night. [Copyright 2014 Todd Tamanend Clark. All rights reserved.]

"WOODLAND SUMMER" High school has been a holocaust all its own; Pentecostalism persecutes me at home. I run away to a cabin in the Waynesburg woods, I deliver newspapers early to the neighborhoods. In this woodland summer, In this woodland summer, Civil disobedience And a different drummer In this woodland summer. Alone in the fractured forest, I never tire Of the screech owl in the distance beyond the fire. I meet Debbie Chambers at the Jacktown Fair. She has sparkling jade eyes and long dark hair. In this woodland summer, In this woodland summer, Civil disobedience And a different drummer In this woodland summer. Deep in the Waynesburg woods… Deep in the Waynesburg woods… Deep in the Waynesburg woods… Free rent at a commune becomes the bartered deal! I paint black portraits on a rare red automobile -- Frank Zappa, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Grace Slick -- Manifesting in my mind, darkly psychedelic! In this woodland summer, In this woodland summer, Civil disobedience And a different drummer In this woodland summer. [Copyright 2014 Todd Tamanend Clark. All rights reserved.]

"SURREALISTIC SAN FRANCISCO" My bloodstream absorbs the entheogenic psilocybin, And my sensual perceptions are extensively enhanced. All the myriad material things that surround me Go miraculously into a sacred sidereal dance. Surrealistic San Francisco! Surrealistic San Francisco! Surrealistic San Francisco! Surrealistic San Francisco! We are merely three-dimensional moving shadows Of the invisible world beyond our limited senses. We experience the impact of morose metaphors Originating outside our residual residences. Surrealistic San Francisco! Surrealistic San Francisco! Surrealistic San Francisco! Surrealistic San Francisco! [Copyright 2014 Todd Tamanend Clark. All rights reserved.]

"WE HOLD THE ROCK" We hold The Rock! We hold The Rock! Today: Alcatraz! Tomorrow: Turtle Island! [Copyright 2014 Todd Tamanend Clark. All rights reserved.]

"MARRIAGE AT MIDNIGHT" Unholy Halloween Radiates and blasphemes, Demands subversive delight, Gazes out otherworldly windows And focuses raw appetites. (Marriage at midnight) Like a black mass, (Marriage at midnight) Share the red wine... (Marriage at midnight) Shatter the glass... Thirteen of us convene Attempting to redeem The conjugal delirium Buried in brilliance, Seen in shadows, Present among pendulums. Dearly Beloved… We are gathered here To defy the barriers of the colonial control systems! We are gathered here To celebrate the freedom within the togetherness! We are gathered here To become one another's vehicle for newborn visions! We are gathered here To scream in ecstasy!!!! (Marriage at midnight) Like a black mass, (Marriage at midnight) Share the red wine... (Marriage at midnight) Shatter the glass... New music floats between Electronic machines, And the totems in my black beer (Owl, Snake, Wolf, Crow, and Bear), Drunk on my bride being near, Climb over each other Like starving lovers, Like drowning warriors, Like breath behind masks, Like a shade's strangling grasp, (Marriage at midnight) Like a black mass, (Marriage at midnight) Share the red wine... (Marriage at midnight) Shatter the glass... Day of the Dead! Day of the Dead! Day of the Dead! Day of the Dead! [Copyright 2014 Todd Tamanend Clark. All rights reserved.]

"FIRST NATIONS FIRST" Children were kidnapped from many, many reservations And forced to attend fascist boarding school education. Their names were changed; their heads were shaved; And their spirit hearts were driven to an early grave. Carlisle, Pennsylvania! Carlisle, Pennsylvania! Carlisle, Pennsylvania! Carlisle, Pennsylvania! The children endured molestation, rape, and abortions, While the newspapers printed disinformation and distortions. The children sang hymns to Europe while dying inside, Just another insidious step closer to total genocide. Dachau, Pennsylvania! Dachau, Pennsylvania! Dachau, Pennsylvania! Dachau, Pennsylvania! Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, Nazis slaughtered Jews, and Christians slaughtered us. Through the American Indian Movement, we will rise again! From now on, "First Nations First!" until the occupation's end! Here's where we hold the line against the destruction of our cultures! Here's where we hold the line against the vampire and the vulture! First Nations First! First Nations First! First Nations First! First Nations First! First Nations First! First Nations First! First Nations First! First Nations First! ("First!") [Copyright 2014 Todd Tamanend Clark. All rights reserved.]

"RISE UP DANCING" Outside the sweat lodge, Crow speaks with the voice Of my deceased grandfather: "Reinstate elder environmental wisdom! Dance a primal dance to prevent cataclysm!" Side worlds peak with a race against death; Side worlds lurk on the brink where I dream in darkness. The power of the word reinvents endless worlds, Memories of freedom, and answers against menace. Side worlds unleash energy emanating from the ruins; Side worlds reveal symptoms; the impact fades to black. Eruptions of medicine ripple across the time pool Into territories from which there is no turning back. "Reinstate elder environmental wisdom! Dance a primal dance to prevent cataclysm!" Animated petroglyphs rise from ancient rocks; Voices and visions shimmer across the river; Bare footprints appear on the sliding banks; Specters tread single file along the Warrior Trail. The new clash of cultures is dancing... Dancing through the side worlds... Worlds will die and worlds will whirl... Whirl into change and rise up dancing! Rise up dancing! Rise up dancing! Rise up dancing! (Dancing through the side worlds!) Rise up... (Rise up...) Rise up... (Rise up...) Dance an uprising! Dance an uprising! "Reinstate elder environmental wisdom! Dance a primal dance to prevent cataclysm!" [Copyright 2014 Todd Tamanend Clark. All rights reserved.]

"ANIMAL CONTACT" From the holocaust of history To the potential of the side worlds, Night words become Target images, Women with wings. Tonight's sky is fractured by a dozen starry leaks; Its animals are my equals, and we feel our heat. Right now! Tonight! It's animal contact. Yes, it's animal contact right now. The grass of my homeland is the parent of my feet; The wind is the winding voice of prayer as it speaks. Right now! Tonight! It's animal contact. Yes, it's animal contact right now. Invisible animal Follows the maize meal circle Around my impeccable seclusion In the sweltering summer night. She has the ears of a bat; she has the eyes of a hawk; She has the tail of a lynx; she has a rattlesnake in her walk. Right now! Tonight! It's animal contact. Yes, it's animal contact right now. Fur and feathers and claws and pheromone scents... We congregate and conjugate and copulate with sonar sense. Right now! Tonight! It's animal contact. Yes, it's animal contact right now. "SHAPESHIFTING THE MONONGAHELA NIGHT" We awaken and find ourselves no longer in the real world; We awaken and hide from mirrors, damning the hand we were dealt; We awaken and learn to transcend the propagandas of guilt; We awaken and begin shapeshifting the Monongahela Night. Monongahela Night, Monongahela Night, Shapeshifting the Monongahela Night... We prowl the wild hills of Turtle Island in search of dancing ghosts; We prowl forgotten valleys, eyes gleaming with penetrating totems; We prowl on the fringes of your colonial civilization; We prowl with lethal intent, shapeshifting the Monongahela Night. Monongahela Night, Monongahela Night, Shapeshifting the Monongahela Night... We engage ignorant enemies in mysterious firefights; We engage combat centers of deep brain ominously screaming; We engage timeless freedoms in hope of holistic transition; We engage body and place, shapeshifting the Monongahela Night. Monongahela Night, Monongahela Night, Shapeshifting the Monongahela Night... When drums echo dark thunder From an obsidian sky, The cycle of the seasons Reveals the smoking mirror; The cycle of the seasons Reveals the medicine wheel. When drums echo dark thunder From an obsidian sky, The rhythm of the river Reveals the path to power; The rhythm of the river Reveals the landscape within. We chant inside/outside in ceremony and in secret; We chant in the tribal circle of a living universe; We chant hours & days & weeks until we are drunk on chanting; We chant a holy madness, shapeshifting the Monongahela Night. Monongahela Night, Monongahela Night, Shapeshifting the Monongahela Night... We breathe (____/____) the breath of the Supreme Mystery; We breathe (____/____) other sides of our selves; We breathe (____/____) the rewards of the primal long view; We breathe fresh, clean spirit, shapeshifting the Monongahela Night. Monongahela Night, Monongahela Night, Shapeshifting the Monongahela Night... [Copyright 2014 Todd Tamanend Clark. All rights reserved.]

"WHY THE EARTH EATS THE DEAD" Winter, spring, summer, fall, Deep within temple walls, By the rack of inlaid skulls, Mexica priests heed the call. Why the earth eats the dead... Why the land must be fed... Why the sky turns to red... Why the earth eats the dead... For the plants, for the seeds, For the food that we eat, For our tongues, for our teeth, For the air that we breathe. Why the earth eats the dead... Why the land must be fed... Why the sky turns to red... Why the earth eats the dead... For the wind, for the tide, For the clouds in the sky, For our ears, for our eyes, For the tears that we cry. Why the earth eats the dead... Why the land must be fed... Why the sky turns to red... Why the earth eats the dead... For the owls, for the hawks, For the stones where we walk, For the maize on its stalk, For the sound we call rock. Why the earth eats the dead... Why the land must be fed... Why the sky turns to red... Why the earth eats the dead... [Copyright 2014 Todd Tamanend Clark. All rights reserved.]
