about

"BRAIN AND SPINAL COLUMN" examines the limitations of how the brain filters sensory and other informational input. This is the second of two recorded versions of this song, one in 1977 and one in 1984. It has very heavy vocoder usage. This version features Allen Ravenstine from the group Pere Ubu on analog modular synthesizer.

Synthesizers: ARP AVATAR, EML ELECTROCOMP 200, Sequential PROPHET-5. Effect: Moog VOCODER. Electronic Percussion: Linn LINNDRUM, Pollard SYNDRUM QUAD.

lyrics

"BRAIN AND SPINAL COLUMN" [#2]

Evening animal leaps and bounds,
Half intellect, half emotional clown!

Rigid categories vanish!
Surrealists soon get their wish!
Thought impulses turn vaporish!
Cells shimmer with lust and fusion!

What divides truth from illusion?
It’s your brain and spinal column!
What reads senses in confusion?
It’s your brain and spinal column!

Hemispheres sustain a gray glow
From illegitimate egos
To central nervous libidos,
But engrams claim deep seclusion.

What divides truth from illusion?
It’s your brain and spinal column!
What reads senses in confusion?
It’s your brain and spinal column!

World within a world!
Dream within a dream!
Art within an art!
Scream within a scream!

At last, centers built to a fill
Release, relax as is their skill,
And tomorrow, stimuli will
Not stop making their intrusion.

What divides truth from illusion?
It’s your brain and spinal column!
What reads senses in confusion?
It’s your brain and spinal column!
